which was the morning
I awoke in an alien world
full of creatures who
bear no resemblance
to those that I know
that I love my familiar
acquaintances all of my
cherished experience
somehow so suddenly gone

where is human compassion
I can’t seem to find common
decency born of respect
nor a trace of once prevalent
sweet common sense
I feel lost among values
new cold and strange precepts
at odds with the ones I once
shared with the multitude

whatever happened to ethical
scripts of self-government
how did the comfortable
trust in our core institutions
dissolve into painful disdain
when did people lose touch
with the impulse to noble
behavior and fall instead into
embrace of base instincts
